On both sides of the central composition we can see the figures of the apostles, carried on the clouds by angels. In the upper part of the central composition there are two scenes showing the apostles breaking the bread (along with the figure of the ascending Virgin they make up the composition «The Virgin Appears before Apostles as they are Breaking the Bread»). At the bottom of the central composition we can see border-scenes with the annunciation of death to Virgin Mary, her prayer on Mount Olivet, Pharisees before a king, the cutting of Avphonius’ hands as the body of the Virgin is carried and St. John prayng before the Virgin’s tomb.

The scenes of the four festivals on the icon obviously represent a program suggesting different interpretations. In the upper left part of the icon is the scene of the Nativity of Christ, in the right part is the Dormition of the Holy Virgin. In the bottom part are the scenes of the Theophany and the Appearance of the Angels to the Myrrh-Bearing Women. -
The icon is a copy of the miracle-working icon which disappeared from the Kiev Caves during the war. The Mother of God is on the deathbed with two groups of Apostles interceding. The Apostle St.John is depicted standing and bending down to Her face.

Nativity, Presentation in the Temple, Annunciation, Dormition of the Mother of God
In the centrepiece of the icon divided into four parts there are four events of Her hagiography. Her Nativity, Presentation in the Temple, Annunciation and Dormition. On the raised flat borders of the icon panel are two saints. -
In the center of the icon is the figure of the deceased Mother of God lying on a high couch with her arms crossed on the breast. By the couch stand the apostles and hierarchs; on either side of the couch are torches. Behind the couch is the figure of Jesus Christ holding the soul of the Holy Virgin (depicted as a baby wrapped in greenish-white clothes). Two angels fly down from the top, ready to take up her soul. In the upper part of the icon are the angels ascending the Mother of God’s soul to heavens depicted as a blue semi-circle with golden stars, and the apostles flying in the clouds, escorted by two angels. Beside the deathbed is a low pedestal with red shoes thereupon. Behind the deathbed is John the Baptist pressing himself against the bedside. To the left, in the first row, near the bedside stand Peter with a censer, beside him Mark and the young Thomas behind him. In the second row are James and Bartholomew, with their heads inclined to each other; beside them are two hierarchs – St. Hiertheus with a golden hand-censer and Dionysius the Aeropagite. To the left of the deathbed, inclined to the Holy Virgin’s feet, are the Apostle Paul, the Evangelists Luke and Matthew. In the second row stand the Apostle Andrew, slightly leaning forward, James, the Bishop of Jerusalem and the brother of the Lord, the Apostles Simon and the young Thomas. To the left stand Sts. Thomas and James. In the middle row, to the left, is Bartholomew, to the right is Mark, in the bottom row are John the Baptist and Peter. The right group is represented by the apostles Simon (left) and Philip (right). In the middle row stand Sts. Luke and Andrew, in the bottom row are Sts. Paul and Matthew.

The Dormition of the Holy Virgin is represented according to the most accurate iconographic version including the depictions of those taken to Jerusalem on the clouds by the angels to pay a last tribute to Our Lady, the Ascension of Our Lady Who is welcomed by the angels at the gates of paradise, the four saints staying at Her deathbed and also the scene of severing the hands of impious Hebrew Aufonius who tried to overthrow the deathbed of Our Lady during the funeral procession to Gethsemane. The angels depicted in the quadrant and the archangel severing the hands of Aufonius date back to the 19th century but apparently follow the original iconography.

In the upper part of the icon are angels ascending the soul of the Holy Virgin to heaven, depicted as a semi-circle with golden stars, and the apostles flying in the clouds, accompanied by the angels. The Mother of God is depicted seated on a throne in a segment of heaven. In the bottom part is the scene of Athonios having his hands cut off.

The iconography has a specific feature: the sheets with the liturgical texts in the hands of the saints.

The icon from the Festival row dates back to one of the iconographic types which was well-known in the Russian art of the late 14th – beginning of the 15th century. Its specific features – the pose of Christ bowing His head to the deathbed of Our Lady and His double glorious halo with the depiction of the host of angels. A number of iconographic features of each of the interceding apostles and the figures of the two saints standing along the sides of the composition also date back to the Moscow icons of the early 15th century. To the right is represented the saint Ignatius the “Theophorus”, to the left – the saint Hiertheus of Athens mentioned as Dorotheus in the inscription by mistake. The icon has a specific feature: the episode with the punishment of Hebrew Aufonius which rarely appeared in the icons of the Festival row of iconostasis.

Dormition of the Holy Virgin and saints Vladimir, Boris and Gleb
Two section icon. In the upper part of the icon is depicted the Dormition of the Holy Virgin. The Mother of God is represented lying on the deathbed, the apostles are wailing over Her. Behind the deathbed is the figure of Christ in the glorious halo holding a child in His hands – the symbol of the soul of Our Lady. Apart from the apostles against the two architectural scenes are depicted the four saints: Timothy of Ephesus, Hiertheus of Athens, Jacob of Jerusalem, Dionysius the Areopagite and also the women – the maids of the Mother of God. Before the deathbed is shown archangel Michael severing the hands of the impious Hebrew Aufonius who tried to overthrow the deathbed of Our Lady during the transfer of the body from Jerusalem to Gethsemane for entombment. In the lower part of the icon are represented the frontal figures of the saint prince Vladimir, Equal-to-the-Apostles, and his sons – saint princes-martyrs Boris and Gleb. The princes are depicted full-length in the princely clothes holding the swords in their left hands and with the martyr crosses in their right hands. -

In general the iconographical type of the icon corresponds to the tradition and includes the depictions of the Mother of God on the deathbed, the apostles, Christ in Majesty with the soul of the Holy Virgin in His hands and also the scene of severing the hands of the impious Aufonius who tried to overthrow the deathbed of Our Lady. Among the interceding can be distinguished the figures of the unknown saint (the left group of the apostles) in the vestment decorated with the crosses holding the Gospel book in his hands and the angel standing at the deathbed of the Mother of God to the right. Apostles John the Theologian and Paul standing close to the deathbed are represented in the centre of the composition before the figure of Christ. The depiction of Aufonius as a long-haired adolescent instead of the elder with the Hebrew headwear is unusual.

In the upper part of the icon in the carved frame is depicted the Mother of God lying on the deathbed surrounded by the Apostles. In the centre is the figure of Jesus Christ holding the wrapped child – the symbol of the chaste soul. In the lower part of the icon are depicted interceding Antony and Theodosius of the Cave. -
