Annual menaion with scenes from the Resurrection and the Passion of Christ
The central part of the the mullion depicts scenes from the Passion of Christ and the Ressurection. The New Testament scenes frame the images of the saints in the order of the months they are honored. The Menaion is framed by iconographic versions of the icons of the Holy Virgin. -
The mullion represents the scene of Jesus Christ descending into Hell. The border panels show Gospel scenes. -
In the center is the scene of the Descent into Hell. The border panels represent Gospel scenes. -
In the center is shown the scene of the Descent of the risen Jesus Christ into Hell. The border panels represent the feasts. -
The icon represents the scene of the Resurrection of Christ and His Descent into Hell. -
In the upper part of the composition, in the center, we can see the «Resurrection» , as Crist is rising from the tomb. Above, the scene of the «Ascension» is represented, on the top of it, on the upper border, the New Testament Trinity («Synthronus»). On both sides of scenes «Raising from the Tomb» and the «Ascension» in the upper part of the icon, there are: to the left – Crucifixion, Doubting Thomas, Entombent, Christ appears before St. Mary Magdalene and the appearance of an angel to the Holy Women; to the right – the evening meeting in Emmaus, the conversation of the Good Criminal with Elijah and Enoch in Paradise, St. Peter before the empty tomb of the Lord. At the bottom part of the icon there is the composition «Descent into Hell», which includes figures of angels, who are chaining Satan, and of saints, marching to Heaven. The right lower corner of the icon shows Christ appearing before the apostles at the Sea of Tiberias. -
Resurrection, the Descent into Hell, with the feasts, passion and Gospel scenes
The center of the icon represents the scene of the Resurrection – the Descent into Hell in an expanded iconographic redaction noted for a detailed interpretation of the key event, which includes additional episodes. The basic part of the centerpiece depicts the frontal figure of Jesus Christ standing on the broken gates of hell, Adam and Eve rising from the graves and a group of prophets led by John the Baptist to the right of the Savior. -

In the centrepiece-Jesus Christ arisen from the dead. The marginal scenes depict the festivities. -
The icon is divided into three segments. In its upper tier is Resurrection and the Mother of God of Kazan, and in the lower –are the chosen saints. -
The centerpiece depicts the Resurrection – the Descent into Hell in the most detailed iconographic version of this subject with some additional motives included. The centre of the icon represents Christ in Majesty, staying on the broken gates of hell and holding the hand of Adam rising from his grave followed by the procession of righteous people in white clothes. To the left of Christ, above, is another procession consisting of the prophets and the forefathers depicted according to the tradition (some prophets hold the symbols of their prophecies). This procession is headed by John the Baptist, David and Solomon. -
The Yaroslavl icon is a complex iconographic variant depicting the scenes of the Resurrection, the Descent into Hell and Paradise – the meeting between the Wise Thief and his forefather Enoch and the Prophet Elijah. This composition has been spread in Russia since the 17th century. -

The literary source for this complex multi-figured composition is the Book of Psalms and the apocryphal Gospel according to Nicodemus. This icon best represents the Palekh ancient art imitation style.
