John the Warrior

Iconography:  John the Warrior, St., Life cycles of John the Warrior

Date: XIX century. First half of the 19th century.

Material: Wood, levkas, tempera, gold

Dimensions:  height 31,1 cm, width 26,5 cm

St. John is shown dressed in military vestments holding a sword and a lance in his hands. On either side of his figure are his life scenes.

Border scenes:

1. John the Warrior praying to Christ;

2. John the Warrior setting Christians free;

3. Julian the Apostate orders John to kill and torture Christians;

4. John leading the army ordered to kill Christians.
