Nativity of John the Forerunner

Iconography:  John the Baptist - the Angel of the desert, Nativity of John the Baptist

Date: XVII century. Second half of the XVIIth century

Iconographic school/art center:  Kargopolye

Origin: was removed from the bogoyavlenskaya church in the village of Pogost, Kargopolsky district, Archangelskaya region (1784 )

Material: Wood, cut-back central portion, levkas, tempera

Dimensions:  height 149 cm, width 124 cm

In the upper part is depicted John the Forerunner – Angel of te desert with the unfolded scroll in his hands. Text of the inscription is: «Се агнец Божий…».  Below against the background of the chambers are the scenes of the Nativity and washing of John the Baptist. In the lower right corner is the figure of Zachariah.
