Savior Not Made by Hands, Chris in the Tomb

Iconography:  Savior Not Made by Hands, Do not lament for me, oh, Mother

Date: XIV century. First half of the XIVth century

Iconographic school/art center:  The Rostov icon-painting school

Origin: was removed from the Vvedenskaya church in the village of Kuzmino on Knyazhostrov, Primorsky district, Archangelskaya region (1858). 

Material: Wood, cut-back central portion, canvas, levkas, tempera

Dimensions:  height 105 cm, width 75 cm

This iconographic variant includes two depictions of Christ, dead – from the “Crucifxion” and Christ Who – in “Savior Not Made by Hands”. At the sides of crucified Christ are the Mother of God and John the Theologian. This composition can be traced back to some icon of the first half of the 14th century that was honored and has not survived (which in its turn can be traced back to some Byzantine icon).
