Miracle of Saint George and the dragon

Date: XVII century. Late XVIIth - early XVIIth century

Origin: Nikolskaya church in the village of Yakimovskaya in Yuriyev – Navolok of the Krasnoborsky district, Archangelskaya region (1855).

Material: Wood, canvas, levkas, tempera

Dimensions:  height 145 cm, width 116, 2 cm

In the centre of the icon is depicted saint George on horseback slaying the dragon walking out of the lake. The composition includes the depiction of tsarina Elisava, holding the dragon in a leash, and also the tsar, the tsarina and the ourt outside the walls of the town. In the upper part in the quadrant is represented Pantocrator. A specific feature of this icon is the obvious folk interpretation of the scene.
