Holy Virgin of Joy of All Who Sorrow

Iconography:  Holy Virgin of Joy of All Who Sorrow

Date: XVIII century. The late 18th - early 19th centuries

Origin: From the Church of the Nativity of Christ in the village of Bulatnikovo, Murom district.

Material: Wood, tempera

Dimensions:  height 34,5 cm, width 29 cm

The figure of the Mother of God is shown full-length, standing on a cloud. Her figure, with heads spread apart, is enclosed in a pink oval nimbus. With her right hand she holds the royal rod, and with her left three flowers of blue, red and white colors each. Above the Mother of God stands the half-figure of Christ Pantocrator. The Mother of God is surrounded by six groups of suffering people being helped by angels. Due to the lack of inscriptions, in the crowd of suffering people one can identify only two groups – the naked being covered with a mantle by an angel (left, in the middle), and the crippled resting on canes (right in the bottom). Against a background are large red, blue and white flowers. On the left border is the figure of St. Dimitri Rostovsky.

Deposited in the Museum on October 20, 1939.
