Resurrection of Lazarus

Iconography:  Raising of Lazarus

Date: XVII century. 1651 (?)

Iconographic school/art center:  Murom

Origin: From the St. George Church in Murom

Material: Wood, tempera

Dimensions:  height 44,5 cm, width 35 cm

The icon belongs to an abridged iconographic variant. Except Christ, Lazar, the apostles, Jews, Martha and Maria, there is just one servant opening the grave. Against the background, between two hills, in chambers inside Jerusalem, are the Jews who didn’t believe in Christ and “decided to kill him”. Among the unusual features of this icon are the chambers behind Christ’s back, possibly Bethany, sarcophagus with the standing Lazarus, and a round stone nearby. The two latter details possibly appeared on the analogy of the icons of the Myrrh-Bearing Women at the Holy Sepulcher, symbolically depicting the Resurrection of Christ, whose prototype was the Raising of Lazarus.

Deposited in the Museum on March 4, 1935. Restored in 1945-1946 in the Murom Museum by I.I.Tyulin.
