Great martyr Paraskeva Pyatnitsa

Iconography:  Parasceva of Iconium (Pyatnitsa), the Great Martyress

Date: XV century. The second half of the 15th c.

Origin: From the Сhurch of Great martyr George on the river Svidi, Khotenovskaya volost, Kargopol uezd.

Material: Wood, canvas, levkas, tempera

Dimensions:  height 60 cm, width 39 cm

The icon represents the half-length figure of Great Martyr St. Paraskeva Pyatnitsa, portrayed in a frontal pose. In her right hand she holds the octangular martyrdom cross, and in her right, hidden under the wrinkles of her clothes, an alabaster (a jar with myrrh). This jar, a healer’s attribute, is rarely encountered in the iconography of Paraskeva, which is usually portrayed with a cross and scroll.
