The icon from the Deesis row. The figure of the Apostle Paul is one of seven essential elements of any extended Deesis row, in which it places third to the right of Jesus Christ, behind the Holy Virgin and the Archangel Michael. Peter is shown with his right hand extended in a blessing gesture. With his right hand he holds a scroll and a key – the essential attributes of the apostle’s iconography.
